Are you fascinated by machine learning?
There are countless stories about the appearance of learning machines. They portray different outcomes. Some are seemingly positive, like the Wall-E-like utopia in which all our problems are taken away and solved by machines. Others are negative, like the Terminator-like apocalypse in which the machines rebel against us humans.
All these fictions have one thing in common. They describe conscious and sentient machines that are aware of themselves.
But machines have no consciousness.
Even though Google’s LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications) recently claimed to be aware of its existence and therefore a person, it is neither of both. Most scientists say that the words and images produced by artificial intelligence systems like LaMDA create responses based on what humans have already written on Wikipedia, Medium, and everywhere else on the Internet. And that doesn’t mean the model understands the meaning or is self-aware.
