Fear The Tantalizing Charms Of The Quantum Sirens
The literature on quantum pedagogy lacks an intermediate level of abstraction that is useful for practical work.
First, the literature on quantum computing lures you in with simple terms about seemingly extremely complicated concepts.
The beautiful explanations of quantum mechanical concepts will captivate you at first. They sing softly and seductively.
You will be enticed with high-level explanations like these:
- Quantum Superposition: A particle exists in a combination of multiple states at the same time. Sounds interesting, right? “Tell me more!”
- Quantum Entanglement: Two particles sharing a state, no matter how far apart they are in the universe.”I heard that quantum computers would be fast-but instantly-wow!”
- Quantum Interference: Particles exhibit wave-like properties that allow them to overlap — constructively or destructively — to enhance correct outcomes and cancel out incorrect ones during computation. “I’m sold!”
But the quantum mechanical concepts show their gruesome faces as soon as you go into more detail.
There is a great heap of dead men’s bones lying all around, with the flesh still rotting off them. Therefore pass these Sirens by, and stop your men’s ears with wax that none of them may hear; —The Odyssey Book XII
